Lauren, Public Health, Junior
“I hope that my story will help people to value the fact that we are all different and made in our own unique ways.”
Lauren stands as a powerful example of resilience and purpose, navigating the world as a Black American woman grounded in her Christian faith. For Lauren, faith is not only a source of personal strength but a beacon that has helped her face uncertainty with courage, especially as she works toward a future that makes her family proud. Her roots as a daughter and sister profoundly shape her commitment to serve others, which she brings to life through her Public Health major and her community work in Washington, D.C. These experiences have only reinforced her desire to impact lives on the most personal level possible, inspiring her to pursue a path that uplifts those most in need.
Confronting assumptions around her identity, Lauren challenges the expectation that Black women are “meant” for the humanities, a stereotype she meets head-on as a Public Health major. Even as some react with a subtle “surprise” masked as praise, Lauren proudly charts her own course. Among her most treasured possessions is a cross necklace from her late grandmother, a piece that represents the strength and love of her family, grounding her amid life’s challenges.
Lauren hopes her story will remind others to honor each person’s unique journey and to spread kindness throughout the American University community.
